John Derryberry, born about 1819 in TN and believed to be the eldest son of (given name unknown) Derryberry and wife Cassey.  John was a farmer.

It is recorded in the superior court records of Dade Co, that in the month of February, 1853 a John Derryberry was the best-bidder on eight lots of land that had been seized for failure to pay taxes, by sheriff Joseph J Killian. They were lot’s #47, 57, 62, 67,71 & 78 in the 19th District of Section 4 of Dade Co. and Lot’s # 94 & 139 in District 10 Section 4, of Dade Co GA. The purchase price per lot of land was $5.05 each. We believe that these two John’s are one in the same, as this was the only John Derryberry in Dade Co. old enough to purchase land.

John married about 1838, probably in TN, Miss Lucinda ?? born about 1822 in IL or TN, They had the following children:  William C Milton, born about 1839 TN, Sarah, born about 1842 TN, Caroline, born about 1845 Dade Co, Margaret Ann, born about 1847 Dade Co, Cassa A, born about 1850 Dade Co,  John H, born May 1852 Dade Co,  James M, born about 1854 Dade Co, Cassa A Henderson Filmore, born 7 May 1857 Dade Co and Martha born about 1863 Dade Co GA. We assume by the dates and places of birth that John & Lucinda Derryberry did not make the move to Dade Co GA until about 1844.

John died between 1863/70. It is unknown, if his death occurred as a result of natural causes or from an incident during the Civil War.

After John’s death, Lucinda moved to Jackson Co Alabama, where she is listed in the 1870 Census records with children, Cassie A. age 19, John, age 18, Philmore, age 12 and Martha age 7.

Lucinda remarried after 1870 and migrated with the rest of her family to Texas. We have found in 1880, Travis Co, TX, John H Derryberry age 28, wife Ella age 28 and children Juniata age 6, William T age 4 & Alice M age 2, whom we believe to be the son of Lucinda Derryberry, residing next door to William Gilmer age 36, wife Marg A age 35, Jessie a daughter age 12, William M age 11, James age 10 Catherine age 8 and Lucinda Moore age 62 documented as mother-in-law. It is my belief that this family is the daughter of Lucinda.

There is no further information available at this time on Lucinda Derryberry & her family.
