The person that was recorded the farthest back in my family that I know about is Ellis Jones. He was my tenth great grandfather. Although I don’t know when he died, I know that he was born in the year 1650. Ellis married a woman named Jane and moved to America from Wales in 1682. The only child I know of that they had was a girl named Dorothy Jones. Dorothy was born in 1672 and married a man named Richard Cantrell. Dorothy and Richard had a son named Joseph Cantrell. Joseph Cantrell married a woman named Catherina. Joseph was born close to the turn of the century, in 1700. Joseph and Catherina had a son named John Cantrell. John was born in 1724 in New Hope, PA and died at the age of 79 in 1803. John’s wife’s first name is not known, but her maiden name was Brittain. Their son, Abraham Cantrell, was born m PA in 1744, and later moved to Spartanburg, S.C. and became a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His second wife’s maiden name was Watson. Abraham and his second wife had two children that I know of, John Cantrell and Elizabeth Cantrell.
John Cantrell was born in 1773 and moved to TN in 1824. He married a woman named Mary Adkins and they had a daughter named Nellie Elinda Cantrell. Nellie was born in 1791 and died in 1878. Nellie married John Lewis Davis who was born in 1785 and died in 1878. John’s father was David Davis. David was born around 1750 and was a solder in the Revolutionary War for the S.C. Militia. David’s wife was named Rebecca McMickens. John and Nellie had a son named William Harrison Davis. William was married twice, first, to Brizilla Caskey and second, to my great-great-great-great grandmother, Elizabeth (Bettie) Potter. William and Elizabeth’s birth and death dates were not recorded. William and Elizabeth had a son named Melvin Dallas Davis. He was born 1846 and died in 1925. Melvin married Mary Jane Potter who was who born in 1846 and died in 1910.
Elizabeth Cantrell, the sister of John Cantrell and daughter of John Cantrell and Mary Adkins, was born in 1791, but I don’t know when she died. Elizabeth married Tillman Potter and they had two children, Thomas and Elizabeth.
Thomas Potter was born in 1817 and died in 1894. He married a woman named Fatima Webb. Thomas and Fatima had a daughter named Mary Jane Potter. Mary Jane married Melvin Dallas Davis. (I included their birth and death dates earlier in this record.)
Elizabeth (Bettie) Potter was Thomas Potter’s sister. Elizabeth became the wife of William Harrison Davis and they had a son named Melvin Dallas Davis. Melvin married Mary Jane Potter.
Mary Jane Potter and Melvin Dallas Davis were my great-great-great grandparents. Their eleven children were W. C. (known as Cleve), Daniel Webster, Helen, Icia Marie, Thomas Firman, Tamma (known as Tammie), Mary Etta, George Smith, Alice Bell Martha Elizabeth (known as Bettye), and Willie.
Alice Bell Davis was the ninth child of Mary Jane Potter and Melvin Dallas Davis. She was born on the 16th of July in the year 1878 somewhere near Smithville, TN. On August 12, 1896, Alice married my great-great grandfather, Edward Lee Luton. Edward was born on August 31, 1874, in Humphreys Co., TN. Alice died in October 1965, in Mt. Olive, Nashville, TN. Edward died August 22nd, 1933, in Mt. Olive, Nashville, TN. Alice and Edward had two children that were recorded, Mable Viola Luton and Thelma Davis Luton.
Thelma Davis Luton was my great grandmother. She was born May 17th 1901, in Nashville, TN. On May 17, 1921, she married Aubrey Seldon Shaub, my great-grandfather. Aubrey was born March 1, 1899, in Portland, TN. He died June 3, 1982 in Nashville, TN. My great-grandmother, Thelma, died April 30th of this year of cancer. She was 95 years old
Thelma and Aubrey had three children, Roy Harden, Clarence Gordon, and James Luton Shaub. Clarence is my grandfather.
Clarence Gorden Shaub (my family calls him Papa) was born February 29th, 1924. He married my grandmother, Dorothy Jane Walls (we call her Memo), on August 30, 1947. Memo was born May 18, 1926, in Guntersville AL. Papa was born in Nashville TN. Memo and Papa had four children; Robert Judd, Margaret Ann, John Seldon, and James Luton II.
Margaret Ann is my mother. She was born the 29th of October in 1950, in Davidson Co., Nashville, TN. She married my father, Clyde Edward Barton, November 18, 1979. My dad was born on January 25, 1945, in a house in Chattanooga, TN. I am the oldest child with my sister Laura following me and my brother Eddie coming after her. I was born November 14, 1980, in Chattanooga, TN. This family history stops with me.
