The photo was made in 1929, the beginning of The Great Depression. That depression lasted until Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected president. I hope none of you will ever have to live a period of your lives in that situation. These conditions are brought about by ideologies of our government. Some like a large middle class and others want a lot of wealthy at the top, lots of poor at the bottom and a depletion of the middle class. Young people, please learn your history, keep up with world events, read your papers and by all means “VOTE” in all the elections that your can.

We had to leave our home and go to Mt. Olive, down at the northern end of Lookout Mountain for Dad to teach. There were Fowlers, Hales, Clarks, Masseys, Craigs, Higdons, Daltons and maybe more.

This picture was made over 66 years ago. It shows the wear and tear of the years plus being accessible to many young children after Mother and Dad became unable to watch after everything.

Mattie Pearl Fowler was absent the day the picture was made. The Fowlers lived just below us. I thought their place looked like heaven. There were all kinds of fruits and flowers plus vines. I always knew where the best apples, grapes and peaches were. Dad taught at Mt. Olive two years, and then he got a school at New Salem.
