MCCOLLUMS

The earliest documented record we have for the McCollum family is the birth of David on August 5, 1777 in South Carolina. He married Sarah Graham on November 27, 1797 in Greene County, Tennessee. Sarah must have been born in 1788 as she is list3d as 62 years of age in the 1850 Dade County Census. They must have returned to South Carolina after their marriage because their son Joab was born there on October 19, 1807. His first wife was named Charity. They had several children among them Matilda Ann. All of their children were born in Georgia, the oldest being John in 1831. Matilda was born April 9, 1837. We do know that in 1840 Joab is listed in the Dade County Census.

When he moved to Georgia he brought his parents with him. His wife, Charity, died in 1845 and was possibly the first person buried in the cemetery now known as Sarah’s Chapel. His mother died sometime after 1850 and before 1860. At this time Joab named the cemetery for her and donated the land as a public cemetery. Matilda is the child that our Dade County line came from, she having married Robert Franklin Lea (see Lea Family). Joab married Sarah M. the second time. She died August 25, 1852 and is buried beside her husband who died December 31, 1893. (Used by permission HISTORY OF DADE COUNTY GEORGIA by Retired Senior Volunteer Program, 1981.)
